Friend-in-Need Trust was created in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India in June 2006 as a sister organization to Association Un-Ami (meaning a friend in French). Association Un-Ami was created in Reims, France in February 2006.

Both these organizations were created by Mrs. (Dr.) Shyama V. Ramani an Indian economist based in France to coordinate a Franco-Indian reconstruction (FIR) project initiated in January 2005.

The objective of project FIR is to help an isolated fishing village, Kameshwaram, attain fundamental developmental goals like income security, basic sanitation and health standards, gender equality and security for children through the introduction of innovations (new to Kameshwaram) in the form of new structures, new technology, new management routines and new social norms. Kameshwaram is located in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu along the coast and had been severely damaged by the Tsunami of December 2004.
