MISSION STATEMENT

September 2007

The mission of Association Un-Ami (France) and Friend-in-Need Trust (India) is to:

Motivate, support, facilitate, monitor and evaluate the introduction of innovations in the form of new structures, new technology, new management routines and new social norms, to attain environmental and socio-economic security in the marginalised zones of India.

Motivate:

Donors: Through being an intermediary agency that lets them play a real role in the uplifting of the poor and know to whom and to what their money is going. We will NOT be a black box charity.

Students: Through studying our projects, monitoring the progress and writing reports and research papers.

Policy Makers and NGOs: Through diffusion of our reports giving details of costs and benefits of each of our actions so that they may be replicated and best practices may be shared.

Residents of marginalized zone: To empower themselves more and initiate and actively participate in local development. We do not give charity. Each action is discussed and if there is a mutual accord and commitment from recipients on some form of reciprocal effort in the same project or other developmental goals, the action is implemented. Each action is initiated only after a memorandum of understanding for the reciprocal action is agreed upon and signed.

Support and Facilitate:

NGOs: Through offering job opportunities to initiate and manage our projects.

Students: Through financing the study of our projects.

Monitor and Evaluate:

Coordinator and volunteers go regularly to Kameshwaram to make first hand observations.

In addition to the NGO staff in Kameshwaram, we finance students to go to Kameshwaram regularly to send us independent reports.

We evaluate the evolution of use or disuse of each action using students, as part of their course work at the Masters level.

Our first target in Kameshwaram are :

Elimination of open defecation through the building of individual toilets appropriate to local constraints.
Assuring that all schools in area have clean and working toilets.
  Put in waste management systems.
Make the village as clean as their counterparts in developed countries.

Our long term goals are to:

Map out strategies for the attainment of the MDG in India through case studies, statistical and econometric analysis and theoretical models.

Facilitate the generation of new technology (e.g. toilets), quality norms and socio-economic models (such as incentive systems for utilisation of toilets) that contribute to the economic development of the most poor.

NOT become a BIG organization. Our objective is to have a steady fund base of about Rs.40,000,00 per year or 80,000 $ per year.
